Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that Paraguay and Venezuela are already drawing interest from Bitcoin mining investors because of their access to low-carbon energy sources. He suggested that Colombia’s Caribbean region could follow a similar path and develop into a regional mining hub.
Petro warned that fossil-fuel-powered Bitcoin mining could worsen global warming, urging future crypto operations to use renewable energy instead.
He also pushed for collaboration with the Wayúu Indigenous community, recommending that they be granted co-ownership in future mining operations to ensure meaningful participation and shared advantages.
