EU Considers Revising Landmark Digital Asset Regulation MiCA

The European Commission has begun a formal review of its crypto asset regulatory framework, potentially paving the way for changes just two years after the rules first came into effect.

As part of this process, the Commission launched a public consultation seeking input from both the crypto industry and the wider public on whether the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) should be updated. The consultation will stay open until August 31.

The review reflects the Commission’s view that digital asset markets, along with global regulatory approaches, have continued to evolve since MiCA’s introduction in 2024. Against this background, officials are evaluating whether the existing framework still meets its original objectives.

This reassessment has also sparked discussion about a possible future overhaul of the rules, with some observers informally referring to it as “MiCA 2.”
