G7 Accuses North Korea of Funding Weapons Through Crypto Theft

G7 leaders have voiced concern that North Korea is increasingly using cryptocurrency theft and wider cybercrime activities to support its nuclear and missile development programs.

In a joint statement, the group said it remains seriously concerned about North Korea’s weapons expansion and reiterated its demand for full denuclearization. It also stressed the importance of making progress on resolving the long-standing issue of abducted foreign nationals.

For the first time in a G7 document, North Korea was explicitly named in connection with cryptocurrency theft. Building on this, the leaders called for stronger international coordination, including improved intelligence sharing, regulatory measures, and law-enforcement cooperation to counter cyber-enabled funding of weapons programs.

Meanwhile, recent cyberattacks linked to North Korean hackers include the April compromise of Drift Protocol, which resulted in losses of about $285 million, and a June attack on Humanity Protocol that drained roughly $36 million.

According to Chainalysis, North Korea-linked actors stole around $2 billion in crypto during 2025, pushing their overall historical theft figure to approximately $6.75 billion.
