Tether Plans Launch of Georgian Lari-Backed Stablecoin GEL₮

Tether has announced plans to launch a new stablecoin, GEL₮, backed by the Georgian lari and developed with support from the government of Georgia. The initiative is designed to support faster, lower-cost transactions while also enabling programmable payments and smoother digital value transfers.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s regulatory framework for digital assets is continuing to develop, with rules covering reserve requirements, redemption rights, issuer supervision, and anti–money laundering compliance. The country is also moving to align its standards with international policy trends, including U.S. stablecoin initiatives such as the GENIUS Act.
